The Office of English Language Learners (OELL)

The District 75 Office of Multilingual and English Language Learners (ML/ELL) works with school’ teams to support their ML/ELL students’ English language development. We support teachers with instructional practices, as well as school leaders with policy adherence. Across the district, there are three different programs offered to these students:

English as a New Language (ENL)

Through ENL programs, students receive content area instruction in English with home language supports and appropriate scaffolds, emphasizing English language acquisition. These programs typically serve students from a variety of language backgrounds. ENL teachers collaborate with Special Education teachers to meet the linguistic and academic needs of their diverse students.

Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE)

Students in TBE programs develop skills in their home language while they learn English. These classes are comprised of students from the same language background and are taught by Bilingual Special Education teachers with extensive training in language development. Once a student demonstrates English proficiency, they typically leave the bilingual program and are placed in a monolingual English class.

Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE)

Dual language programs are designed to continue developing home language and English skills throughout a student’s career. These programs are comprised of two groups of students—one group of English language learners from the same language background, and one group of English-proficient students—both learning a new language alongside each other
