NYC Solves

NYC Solves for District 75 is a targeted math initiative piloting in 13 schools to enhance mathematics instruction for students with diverse learning needs. The program includes three schools implementing Illustrative Mathematics and ten schools using Amplify Desmos Math, both designed to promote conceptual understanding and student engagement. This pilot supports educators with high-quality resources and professional learning aligned to the NYC Math Framework. The goal is to foster equitable math experiences and improve outcomes across District 75 classrooms.

Early Education: PreK-2

Across our early childhood classrooms children are actively engaged when provided with the opportunities to explore, discover, investigate, and use tools/materials in creative ways.

Our teachers are encouraged to use play-based instruction in alignment with curriculum and research-based strategies across all subject areas. Throughout the school day, many of our students engage in hands on learning, small and whole group instruction, learning centers and workstations; all of which provide them with the opportunity to practice and gain skills across all domains of development.

Our programs understand the unique needs of each learner and design instruction to support additional developmental skills such as language, communication, and cognition. In order to support the development of foundational skills across all domains of learning, we individualize instruction for each and every child.

Our schools and staff are committed to providing optimal learning opportunities for our youngest learners which includes PreK through 2nd grade as we prepare them for their future.

Elementary School: 3-5

Elementary School: 3-5

As in preK-2, it is very important that the instructional staff in the schools is supported by the district specialists to ensure students develop all the foundational skills they will need throughout school and life.
 
We believe every child deserves to have the Power of Reading, which includes using media and technology! We view Multicultural Literacy, where all student identities are valued and respected in the classroom, as the cornerstone to lifelong learning and success. Literacy skills have an impact on the content areas of Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, as they call for children to be able to read, write, communicate, and listen to the information presented in books, magazines, articles, websites, etc.
 
The D 75 Curriculum and Instruction Team provides workshops, resource links, newsletters, and events for our schools and families to promote the collaborative efforts of both to cultivate the students’ foundational literacy skills, which will ultimately create successful readers.

Middle Schools 6-8

Middle Schools 6-8

As students move to Middle School grades, the information becomes more complex, and we begin to place more emphasis and focus on developing skills to remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create.
 
We do continue to address foundational skill development, as needed, with targeted interventions. In classrooms, students learn to check and cross-check the tons of information presented to them from multiple sources such as social media, multimedia, and websites.
 
Students begin to engage in core content integrated with life-skill activities to support post-school life transition. Functional life skills are developed through exposure to real-world situations, such as role-play, debates, scientific explorations, cooking, shopping, banking, gardening, and project-based learning.

High School: 9-12

Students are beginning to approach adulthood and are encouraged to strengthen self-advocacy and independence skills during instructional time.
 
Students are free to express their views, personalities, and identities in the classroom, as well as, during district-sponsored opportunities such as debates, spelling bees, district events.
 
Students not only read books, but use search engines, videos, blogs, podcasts, virtual worlds, message boards, etc. to research information from a multitude of sources. Students learn how to critically analyze and evaluate messages coming to them through any medium.

Through Age 22, District 75's Work-Based Learning program equips students with real-world skills through hands-on experiences. Students participate in internships, job shadowing, and community-based work programs that align with their individual interests and abilities. These opportunities are designed to foster independence, enhance employability, and prepare students for post-secondary success. By engaging in practical learning environments, students build confidence and gain valuable insights into various career paths.
